Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu was sentenced to life in jail.. The Johannesburg High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, has sentenced former police officer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu to life in prison for murder.
Judge Ramarumo Monama handed down the judgment on Friday.
The judge had previously found Ndlovu guilty of murder (six counts), fraud (four counts), defeating the ends of justice, and attempted murder.
However, the state failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt on the conspiracy to commit murder charge, so it was discharged by Monama.
The former police officer was accused of plotting to kill her sister and her sister’s five children in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, so that she could cash in on insurance and funeral policy payouts.
Before Ndlovu learned her fate, Almerie Myburgh, who is a criminologist with the South African Police Service (Saps), said the former police should be classified as a “serial murderer” given her convictions.
“The crimes before the court were premeditated and meticulously planned well in advance. They were calculated and cold-blooded in their nature,” she said.
Myburgh further recommended direct imprisonment to the court.
“The fact that [Ndlovu] shows no remorse, at this stage, there is no prospect for rehabilitation. I can make no other recommendation, but direct imprisonment,” she added.
The criminologist was one of the witnesses who took to the stand to testify in aggravation of Ndlovu’s sentencing.
Meanwhile, Monama sentenced Ndlovu to life in prison – 25 years for each of the six murders she was found guilty of as well as:
Five years for defeating the ends of justice.
10 years for each count of fraud.
10 years for each of the seven counts of incitement to commit murder.
10 years for attempting to murder her mother, Maria Mushwana.
“Effective period of imprisonment, therefore, is life,” Monama said.
The judge also dismissed Ndlovu’s application for leave to appeal conviction and sentence.
Ndlovu received more than R1.4 million in insurance payouts after the deaths of five of her relatives and her boyfriend over a period of six years between 2012 and 2018.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the insurance policies were mostly for unnatural death and Ndlovu was beneficiary.
Her killing spree came to an end when Vincent Kunene, one of the hitmen she hired to kill her sister as well as her children, was horrified that she wanted kids murdered and reported it to the police.
After this, a trap was set and an undercover police officer filmed Ndlovu telling him to burn her sister and her five children live in a house in Bushbuckridge.
The former police officer, who was stationed at the Tembisa police station, was subsequently arrested.

Foul Play Suspected On Busi Lurayi’s Death After Latest Revelation And Injuries Found On Her Body
Busi Lurayi’s death seems to have so many secrets as investigations are still ongoing. The star was laid to rest last week after she passed away on July 10. According to reports, Busi was found dead in her daughter’s room after she was excused from set for not feeling well. It has also been alleged that she was found with visible injuries and blood was allegedly coming out of her mouth.
The publication alleges that a source, who is a close associate, claimed her body was found with bruises, with blood coming out of her mouth.
Her father Freddy Mokoena found her deceased in her daughter’s room. Apparently, when the police officer arrived, he found Busi’s body bruised on her legs and her mouth was slightly open with blood coming out.
The source said this to the publication: “If she died of natural causes, then why did she have bruises on her legs and why was blood coming out of her mouth when her father found her lying down in her bedroom? Something is amiss here. We can’t wait to see what the autopsy report says.
The source also told the paper that Busi did not have any enemies and hope the police would do a thorough job in finding what exactly caused her death.
“She did not have enemies; she was always a jolly person who was loved by the entire universe. If someone harmed her, that will be so shocking because she would never provoke or hurt anyone. The police should do a thorough job here, we need answers. They know what we are talking about.
